See More of the Sky's Treasures During a New Moon
There are eight commonly-referred-to phases of the moon: New, Waning Crescent, Third Quarter, Waning Gibbous, Full, Waxing Gibbous, First Quarter, and Waxing Crescent. Then back to New. Here in Oakland, California, we will have a New Moon on August 18th.
During the New Moon phase is one of the most enticing times to star gaze, especially if you find yourself in a place without too much light pollution clouding up the night sky. Without the light of the moon shining brightly, you’ll be able to see star clusters and nebulae that might ordinarily be hidden from your view. If you have a pair of binoculars or a telescope (even a small one of three inches), you’ll garner an even clearer view of the gorgeousness of the Milky Way and its ancient star clusters than your naked eye could.
Why not find a dark location from which to admire the night sky this upcoming Wednesday, August 18th? You can bask in all its glory while wearing a mask and remaining physically distant from others to help keep them and yourself safe.
